Growing up with a younger sister was the best because I had my own playing, best friend, and partner-in-crime ever! 🙂 Of course, this came super handy when we wanted to play dress up and be one of our favorite Disney’s Princesses. My sister’s favorite was always Belle from Beauty and The Beast and mine was always, Jasmine from Aladdin. Fast forward to today and Jasmine is still top among my favorites, although because of very own my beautiful little princess. Yes, I am talking about my baby girl, now some of our favorite include Rapunzel, Anna, Elsa, Moana and a few of the classic Princesses we all grew up loving. When Tangled premiered in 2010, my baby girl wasn’t born yet, so I had to wait a few years to enjoy this movie with her. When she was two, I finally had the opportunity to enjoy the movie together and of course, it was instant love for both of us. Now, everytime Tangle is on TV, we both immediately stop what we are doing and sit down to enjoy it again and again. Of course, the minute I heard that Disney Channel was developing a Tangle exclusive TV movie and an animated series to follow the movie, I was beyond excited! Now we can follow the story of Rapunzel, Eugene (Flynn Rider), Maximus, and Pascal (my other favorite) on a weekly basis. One of my favorite parts of this new TV movie and series is that Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi are reprising their roles, pretty cool, right? This week, we had the opportunity to sit down and speak with the Executive Producer/Supervising Director Chris Sonnenburg and Supervising Producer Ben Balistreri and today I get to share with you all our exclusive Q&A conversation about Tangle: Before Ever After and Tangle: The Series.

Tangled Before Ever After – unfolds as Rapunzel acquaints herself with her parents, her kingdom and the people of Corona. Her irrepressible spirit and natural curiosity about the world lead her to realize that there is so much more she needs to learn about the world and herself before she can assume her role as Princess of Corona.

Executive Producer/Supervising Director Chris Sonnenburg and Supervising Producer Ben Balistreri.

As I mentioned above we had the amazing opportunity to chat with Executive Producer/Supervising Director Chris Sonnenburg and Supervising Producer Ben Balistreri and learn a little more about the new Exclusive Disney Channel Tangle: Ever After Movie and Tangle: The Series. One of the first questions that come to mind after having seen the movie and let me say that it is amazing and I know it will become a favorite family movie is why decide to continue with Rapunzel and her story? The answer is best answered by Chris Sonnenburg himself and he had this to say:

“For me, it really kind of came down to, I have two daughters at the time were 14 and 12 are now 15 and 17. And there just seem to be this idea, and it didn’t really like wait on me too much but just looking at the story, that there was this moment at the end of the movie where they meet, right, and they fall in love and then there’s the short, Tangled: Ever After, where they get married. And just looking at the two of those moments I was wondering like well, what happened? Did they get to know each other a little bit more? Like what happened in between that time. And then there’s this great line at the end of the movie where Eugene Fitzherbert, says after years and years of asking and asking I finally said yes. You know, there’s a kind of fun line that he says there which you might be kind of you know, joking about but I also think maybe there was some time in between there. And it started to become like what do I have to say about this time in these people’s lives, and young people’s lives about getting to know yourself, getting to know the people in your lives, getting to understand your relationship with your parents? And if the kids, that had seen the movie in 2010 were maybe 10 at the time or eight then they’re probably getting to be about 17 years old and they might want to know like how is this character that I love so much as a kid coming to grips with this part of her life? And that was kind of for me the in of why to tell the story and how to tell the story.”

My true inspirations are my three kids and hearing from Chris Sonnenburg that he also draws inspiration from his two daughters gave me that sense of recognizing something especial inside these characters and the movie itself. One thing I could reveal about this new movie is that we are not only going to explore the time between when Tangle ends and the time in Tagle Ever After; we also get to see a special moment between Rapunzel, her mom, and a new journal with a special inscription inside out it. This got us wondering what was the inspiration begin this new addition to Rapunzel’s story? Well, Chris said that there are two reasons behind this new addition, number one is

This got us wondering what was the inspiration behind this new addition to Rapunzel’s story? Well, Chris said that there are two reasons behind this new addition, number one is “Number one, again, I’m very much fed by my daughters.” He also went on to say that after his own daughter took a trip to Mexico to build homes, she kept a journal and once she came back is was filled with drawings from her trip. This is why Rapunzel was given a journal in the new movie. “And I was like that’s what Rapunzel would do. She would keep, she’s very creative. She’s very much a storyteller and that’s how she would do it. So, we immediately said well, let’s give Rapunzel a journal that she can keep a record of her, she’s going to want to paint on the road.”

As mentioned, this journal has a special inscription inside of it and the way it came to be is as they say in Hollywood, movie magic. Chris explained it like this: “So, we gave her this journal and then the added element of the inscription came very much from the movie, Glenn Keane who created the character of Rapunzel for the film, had come and I was talking to him about what we wanted to do with the show and he had done this quick drawing for me. I said give me a drawing that’s going to encourage my years as we go into the show. And he had done this picture, this beautiful drawing of Rapunzel and on it he wrote, ‘Plus est en vous,’ and I was like what is that?”

So, what does the phrase means? Chris said this: “And he says well, in the movie, we had this phrase that we were using just in the story rooms of like you know, at the end of the movie all of her magic is gone but she squeezes out one last drop of magic out of her. And he said the reason behind that, the meaning behind that is that we all have more in us that we can push through it and he was telling me like when you feel like you’re at the end of your ropes, if you can’t give any more, push through and there’s always more inside of you. And I thought that was such a beautiful sentiment and I thought that the mother would give it to Rapunzel as like listen, everybody has these expectations of you of a princess, of a daughter, of a girlfriend. But there’s more to you than all–, than everybody else has you know, expected of you and show the world what that is and, and keep a record of that in this journal. So, the phrase means there’s more in everybody. There’s more inside of Eugene. There’s more inside of Pascal. There’s more inside of Corona than everybody just sees on the surface.”

Isn’t that description so touching? I certainly think so. Another thing you will notice is that the look and feel of this movie and series is a bit different than the original movie. This got us thinking why and Ben Balistreri had this to say about that:

FullEver

“One of the things that Chris and I both come from old-school traditional, 2-D Disney background. We started, both started a little over 20 years ago, and so just our passion for that, that feeling of like a good Disney traditional animated film really I think drove us early on to be like hey man, we got an opportunity to push the side of it. And then from like a, just from a bigger story point we really sat down and we were like if this is Rapunzel telling her story, by the time this whole series is over, this should really feel like Rapunzel told us her story.

And how would she tell us that story? She’s not going to sit down in, you know, computer programs and be typing zeros and ones in getting mathematical equations down for our rig. She’s going to sit down and put her hand and actually do it herself. So, we really kind of embraced the whole ideological side of doing a 2-D, series and where we put in everything on these little, there’s little brush strokes like dry brushstrokes in that should feel like she painted it. The lines that surround everything and inside we use a very rough line quality to really give a tactile sense of sketching.

We lay off gradient, like very computer, Photoshoppy gradients as much as possible. They pop up here and there but we kind of stay away in place of feeling like it really feels like a storybook come to life just because it is. We really want to make it feel like she is the person that’s telling you this story.”

And trust me, after seeing the whole thing put together, it sure does feel like a storybook. I cannot wait for the movie to premier tonight so that I can enjoy it with the entire family! Thanks to Executive Producer/Supervising Director Chris Sonnenburg and Supervising Producer Ben Balistreri for taking the time to talk to us about this amazing project.
