Part of the A2 is to design an album art cover to go with our music video.In this part of my blog i will be doing research into album art so i can get an idea of what to include in our album art cover.Here is a brief definition of album art from Wikipedia:

An album art cover and case come in a vew forms and some bands have tried different types of cases over the years.An example of this is the case for the album G N’R LIES by Guns and roses.It was made to look like the album was wrapped in news paper.

We will be going for the stand jewel CD case but with a slight twist of having the front of the case laser etched with the band logo.

One of our influences is a british desginer called Storm Thorgerson.He is personaly responsable for some of the most well known album covers from the past few decades with some of the biggest bands and solo artists like Pink floyd,Muse,Audioslave etc.This is a quick quote from his recent exhibition in london that he ran.It describes of the way in which he does album art cover and develops it.For us it will be alot simpler and will not involve as many people but we can learn from this process to aid ourselves.

  • The Brief. The designer listens to the music (possibly only demos at this stage), reads the lyrics, and talks to the band. These create a ‘brain soup’, from which ideas can be extracted to form the brief.
  • Roughs. Over a number of meetings/days, the designer meets the band again for discussions, in an attempt to pin-down a theme or big idea. This stage is creative, with word-play, honest thoughts, and scribblings. The best are converted to more complete illustrations (the ‘roughs’).
  • Tests. Once a rough is accepted and a budget agreed, a prototype is often created to ensure that the idea works. Depending on the idea, this could involve the creation of scale models from clay or polystyrene. If everything works, the final models are constructed.
  • Shoot. A location is researched and booked, possibly for a long-time if outdoors and in uncertain weather. Models are erected and positioned, with help from volunteers if the shoot is big and complex. A wide range of photographs are then taken, under varying light/weather conditions and filters.
  • Editing. This could be called ‘selection’, where the best shot from the shoot is chosen. This can take several days, if hundreds of similar shots need to be compared.
  • Artwork. Finally, having chosen the perfect shot, any cleaning-up or final computer editing is performed, before handing over the final product

    Digital album art is seen more often these days as it is what the main audiences of these artists like.This way the artist can increase sales to there target market with ease.The mainly consists of computerised editing and bold effects to catch the eye.Digital album covers are easier to make these days with improved technology.

    Black and white album covers in most cases are just as or more effective than colour cases.They stand out more and tend to be simple images which are beasutifully taken and will sell the album for itself.They normaly stand for Sophisitacted and elegant music or highlight the simplesty of the music in that album.

    These album covers tend to be used for bold bands how are very original or have a certain personality theywant to show.It would show the audience that the music may not be mainstream and instead be slightly bizarre.Some of the most controversial album art is in this genre as some bands like to express there views this way.

    Portrait

    Portrait album covers tend to be used mainly by solo artists who’s faces are well known to there target audiences.Th portait shots also makes the album feel more personal and even though most of them tend to be extreme close up shots of the artist the artist can use a vairety of facial exspressions to match the type of music they sell.

    Image based

    Image based album covers normaly only have one photo of them with very little typography(possibly the band name).The image tends to be a bold one so it stands out on the shelf and having an image based album cover can increase sales dramatically.Images tend to relate to the album name and as such can be very bizare yet powerfull.

    After we had carried out our research into cd covers it was time to design ours.We liked the idea of an abstract design which was original.Our first idea was to use the laser in our schools technology department to etch into the from of the case a design.As the band we are doing are not mainstream or well known we decided that a abstract album cover would be the best as it would help to promote the band.The first design we came up with was a ‘Q’ as this was the first letter of our bands name and it also looked like a magnifying glass which was looking into the album.We did the design on 2ddesign as this was the software which the laser cutter uses.It was very simple to use although apon testing we found out it was only etch the outline and not the the bits between the lines.This was due to use not crosshatching the design the let the software know this is what we wanted.Unfortunealy we tried this new method but it did not work even after letting the head of technology in our college try.It was due to gaps in the design but even after zooming in to magnification of 78x we could not find the gaps.

    We were dissapointed about the failure of the etching method as it would be different to anything either of us had seen before.Despite this we still kept this Q design and instead just did the Q on the actual paper cover.To still be more original we came up with the idea of the Q on the front cover being cut out so you can see the inside of the booklet.Once the cover is printed we will cut out the circle by hand.As the band we are doing our corsework on are a drum and bass band we thought about using some darker colours and editing of the cover which is more abstract than normal.We still wanted to use there logo as it is indivual to them but we wanted to edit it so we were not just coyping it.As they were a band somewhere in the front cover we wanted a group photo of them.
    Photoshop was our choice of editing software as two of us knew how to use it and are fimilar with it.Once on photoshop we expireimented with some of the in built effects on photoshop.We had around 1000 to choose from but in the end picked one called ‘Plastic wrapping’ as it gave the cover an effect that suited what effect we were after.On photoshop was a size setting for a cd cover so this saved us alot of time editing it down the perfect size.We wanted the front and back covers plus a inside booklet and two spines.
    This was our first draft of the cover.All that was missing from it was the single name and the fact it was a digipak.

    Next peice to do was the inside bit which you can see thorugh the centre of the Q on the front cover.For this part we deiceded to use some screen shots from the film we made as some of them would be perfect photos.The two photos we used pictures of the drug addict drinking the vodka and throwing up.Merged into two on photoshop the image was quite abstract which we hope would attract people to the album art. We tried to find the lyrics for the song on the internet but as the band is not very mainstream and the single is quite new lyrics were not available online so we had to improvise.We used the three words on which most of the narritive in the film is based. ‘Take it back’ where the key words so we used paint to be able to create a whole side of just these three words.Here is the first draft of the inside selve.
    The rear of the cd case is just as important as the front for us.Somewhere on the rear cover we wanted to use some photos of the main characters/band members so that the cover had some images of the band on it so people knew they were just not a boy band but people who where happen to perform live.Although the photos we took have some very good background it would not match the front cover so we had to edit them.For my AS media project last year i use a website called befunky.com to be able to edit some images into a cartoon form.We decieded to use it again and selected a image effect called ‘Grunge’.This gave the images a purple hue to them.We will also be adding a barcode on the back and the name of the producer.
    We did all three images we had on Befunky.com and used photoshop to blend them all together.

    Sadly Sams memory stick has become corrupt and the final version of the cd cover was on there.The only copy we have of this now is the real one which is in the case at college with the music video disc.


    in this album cover for the album of B.o.B, the YoungAmerican rapper is represented to the audience as a man who comes from the future.his album is about his adventures , and probably how he destroyed his enemies. an example in seen with the background of the artists. the image of a destroyed planet with fire and it shows that the singer did it himself.
    another example is he shows that he’s like a superhero protecting the planet from some bad things , and he shows that he destroyedhis enemies.In another hand the singer wants to shows that he’s strong , his album is gonna be good, its going to be likea burning fire.
